Benchtop 785nm Raman spectrometer: Fluorescence-free molecular analysis and high modularity

The GoyaLab 785 nm Raman Spectrometer is a compact and modular laboratory instrument specifically designed for the spectral analysis of organic compounds, polymers, resins, and complex matrices. By utilizing a near-infrared excitation wavelength at 785 nm, it effectively eliminates parasitic background fluorescence that typically obscures Raman signals on real-world industrial samples.

Offered with a choice of a single-mode (100 mW) laser source for high spatial resolution micro-spectroscopy or a multimode (300 mW) laser for macroscopic bulk sampling of powders and liquids. The instrument is built around a micrometric “3D-Stand” (Class 1 safety), a dedicated vial holder, or a remote interlocked fiber probe.

Optical Architecture Highlights & Laser Options

  • Targeted 785 nm laser excitation tailored to your field:
    • 100 mW Single-mode laser: Highly coherent and narrow beam, preferred for micro-spectroscopy on the 3D-Stand with 40x and 60x objectives, analyzing micrometric inclusions, local stress, and single fibers.
    • 300 mW Multimode laser: Expanded sampling spot maximizing photon collection volume, ideal for heterogeneous powders, granules, turbid liquids, and through-packaging/vial analysis without thermal degradation risks.
    • Fine power adjustment: Dynamic control adjustable from 10% to 100% in 1% steps via SpectroLab software.
  • Radical fluorescence suppression: Selecting 785 nm drastically minimizes the electronic transitions responsible for fluorescent emission, ensuring usable spectra even on raw, colored, or additive-rich matrices.
  • Raman shift range 150 – 3,200 cm-1: Comprehensive analytical window covering the fingerprint region (150 to 1,800 cm-1) and the C-H, O-H, and N-H stretching region (2,800 to 3,200 cm-1). (Customizable range based on requirements).
  • Modular entrance slit & fine resolution: Optical resolution of 10 cm-1 with the standard 25 µm slit, customizable with a 15 µm slit for enhanced spectral separation.
  • High-definition optical sensor & water-cooled option:
    • Standard: High-resolution color Sony IMX676 2D CMOS sensor with low background noise.
    • Research / Low-Signal Option: Scientific water-cooled sCMOS sensor, dedicated to prolonged exposure times for extracting ultra-weak bands.
  • Certified laser safety:
    • Class 1 (total eye safety): Direct use in shared laboratory environments without safety goggles, thanks to the hardware interlock on the enclosed “3D-Stand” and the vial holder.
    • Class 3B: Open configuration without 3D-Stand for optical benches or custom integration.
  • Polystyrene reference auto-calibration: Immediate validation and calibration procedure in SpectroLab using the certified bands of Polystyrene (included with the instrument).

Industrial applications & Use cases

By neutralizing parasitic fluorescence, the 785 nm Raman is the ideal tool for identifying synthetic, organic, and industrial compounds:

  • Fine chemistry, resins & industrial polymers:
    • Filled plastics identification: Rapid characterization of colored commercial polymers or those containing additives, plasticizers, and stabilizers.
    • Cross-linking monitoring: Monomer conversion rate control during epoxy, polyurethane, or acrylic polymerizations.
    • Solvents & reagents: Purity control and incoming inspection without opening glass vials.
  • Security, forensics & customs:
    • Narcotics and illicit substances: Non-destructive detection and authentication of suspicious powders, synthetic drugs, and cutting agents through transparent plastic bags or glass vials.
    • Hazardous materials & explosives: Safe identification of chemical precursors and energetic powders without direct contact.
  • Food & beverage, oils & complex liquids:
    • Vegetable oil authentication: Adulteration detection (e.g., extra-virgin olive oil cut with seed oils), fatty acid unsaturation profiling.
    • Beverages, alcohols, and syrups: Sugar quantification, ethanol dosing, and counterfeit spirit identification.
  • Higher education & academic research:
    • Practical teaching benches in molecular spectroscopy, organic chemistry, and materials science.
    • Total Class 1 safety and operational robustness suited for intensive student use.
